Sourced from a 1 ha clos in the village of Mittelwihr which had been planted at the end of the First World War and, according to a geological study made during the 1960s, is one of the two best terroirs of Gewurztraminer in Alsace, was split between two producers. Facing south/southeast, the vines root in chalky marl soils with a bedrock of sandstone and quartzite and, in 2013, gave a very complex yet refined and tension-filled Gewurztraminer of excellent quality. In 2015, however, Jean-Christophe Bott replanted the whole plot on low-yielding root-stocks and with a density of 6,700 vines per hectare (a lot for Gewurztraminer taking into account its vigorous canopy). The 2013, still from the old vines, opens deep, fresh and pure on the nose, displaying aromatic orange fruit and spicy mineral (flinty) flavors. Beautifully fresh, piquant and salty on the palate, this well-structured, tension-filled and vibrating mineral wine reveals a very long and stimulating finish. Highly recommended. (AG=92+) Bright, gold-tinged yellow. Refined nuances of lemon and jasmine add lift to richer, more concentrated aromas of sweet spices, mirabelle and orange oil. Then bright, dense and juicy, with a multilayered personality and outstanding depth to the pure lemon, marmalade and floral flavors. The spicy, fruity finish is explosive and very long. This little-known site is located at the foot of the Mandelberg vineyard on light sandstone over calcareous subsoil; in fact, I daresay this wine showcases the lightness given by sandstone and the length and depth of the calcaire. This was BottŠ—Ès first vintage of this wine: he has a rental agreement, but given the wineŠ—Ès quality IŠ—Èd suggest he look to buy as soon as possible. (JS=89) A dense and sweet white with some lemon curd and dried pineapple. Hints of ginseng too. Full body, very sweet. A little dull. Drink now."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0126/7007/4944/products/Gewurztraminer_Clos_des_3_Chemins.jpg?v=1545476406
fqn4sw2008fr
Bott Geyl Gewurztraminer "Lieu-dit" Schloesselreben SdGN 2008 (50cl)

"(AG=94) Deep golden-yellow. Marmalade and botrytis notes complicate honey, guava, canned pineapple, candied mango and sweet spices on the nose. Then pure and seamless in the mouth, with harmonious acidity lifting the rich tropical fruit, truffle, pear schnapps and caramel flavors. Boasts marvelous texture and a very long finish. This is a knockout wine. The vines grow on calcaire soil on the other side of the Mandelberg grand cru, opposite the Clos des Trois Chemins. The wine has amazing acidity for a Gew’_rztraminer (160 g/l residual sugar and 7 g/l total acidity) and is less marked by noble rot than an SGN from the Sonnenglanz might be because this terroir doesnŠ—Èt botrytize as easily; in fact, only 50% of the grapes used to make this wine were hit by noble rot. Bott also told me he picked a little earlier here than he did in the Sonnenglanz to help preserve acidity. (RP=89) Marzipan, quince jelly, butterscotch, litchi, and honey dominate the Bott-Geyl 2008 Gewurztraminer Schloesselreben Selection de Grains Nobles along with its nearly 170 grams of residual sugar, for an impression almost excessively confectionary for my palate. Thank heavens that even here there is at least a deeply-buried rivulet of primary juiciness such as characterizes the vintage, and a smoky, faintly bitter note of black tea offers some push-back against its sweetness. But this wineŠ—Ès acidity is no higher than that of the Š—“regularŠ— grand cru bottlings in the present collection, and I suspect that is simply too little for its sugar. I donŠ—Èt doubt that this will keep for at least 12-15 years, but I strongly suspect that it will still be overly sweet at that point."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0126/7007/4944/products/Gewurstraminer_Lieu-Dit_Schloesselreben_SGN.jpg?v=1545476469
gcp4sw2015fr
Bott Geyl Riesling "Lieu-dit" Garfenreben 2015 S.G.N.
